Toy Safety

What are Toys?

Toys are products designed or intended, exclusively or not, for use in play by children under 14 years of age. They contribute to children development as play is an essential part of growing up. Toys for children below 36 months have special safety requirements, guaranteeing the safety of our most young ones. The legislation aims to ensure that toys meet safety requirements that are amongst the strictest in the world, especially in relation to the use of chemicals in toys.

Toy products are regulated in the EU by the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC  which repealed the former  Directive 88/378/EEC.

Placing on the Market

To place toys in the market, it needs to bear the CE marking, and be accompanied by the EC declaration of conformity. To draw the declaration of conformity a process called conformity assessment needs to be followed.

The manufacturer of a toy can choose between two possible conformity assessments, when they are using the European harmonized standards they can go through self-verification, or the can choose to go through a third party verification by a notified body.
