Nitromethane | Some insights

The Explosive Precursors Regulation (EU) 2019/1148 lists nitromethane as a restricted explosive precursor that cannot be used by the general public above a concentration of 16%. However, nitromethane is commonly used in various hobbies.

Notably, a popular use of Nitromethane is a fuel additive for drag racing, as well as fuel for Radio-Controlled Racing (RC Racing) cars. When used correctly, nitromethane will provide a boost to power and engine tuning. Whilst the percentage of added nitromethane in fuel varies, hobbyists will typically use pure nitromethane to create their fuel mixture, according to their needs.

However, due to its volatility and ability to combust without additional oxygen, it is also used to create explosives, sometimes even of an illicit nature.  This would mean that hobbyists that are members of the general public in Malta are not allowed to purchase, deal or store nitromethane above a concentration of 16% without a valid licence.

The MCCAA is the authority in charge of issuing such licences for Malta. If you, or anyone you know requires licencing for nitromethane, please do not hesitate to get in touch. We will guide you through the steps necessary to legitimately utilise nitromethane without performing illicit activities.

If you require further information on the regulation, have a look at our information page here. Any questions should be directed towards the Regulatory Affairs Directorate within the Technical Regulations Division within the MCCAA via email on [email protected].
