Raising Awareness on the e-Mark Directive

Event Date 20 May, 2025

The MCCAA Hosts Information Session for Economic Operators

The National Metrology Institute within the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) recently organised an information session aimed at enhancing awareness on the e-mark directive among local economic operators, particularly packers and importers. The session was held in collaboration with the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry and brought together stakeholders from across the packaging and importation sectors.

The session was opened by the CEO of the Malta Chamber commended the MCCAA for its continued efforts to engage with economic operators. She noted that the Authority's proactive approach in educating businesses helps promote compliance while fostering fair competition. The CEO emphasised that this collaboration is crucial in maintaining a level playing field for all operators within the internal market.

Following this the Chairperson of the MCCAA, who provided an overview of the e-mark directive and its relevance within the local context. She explained the role of the MCCAA in ensuring that businesses are well-informed about their legal obligations under this directive and highlighted the Authority’s commitment to support industry players through guidance and practical information. The Chairperson also underlined the importance of the market surveillance system in place, which ensures that products placed on the market comply with both EU and national regulatory frameworks.

The session featured a detailed presentation by Dr Nicola Testa, Director of the National Metrology Institute, who outlined the core elements of the e-mark directive. Dr Testa provided an in-depth explanation of the directive’s framework, including the administrative requirements for economic operators and the control mechanisms expected from competent authorities. His presentation clarified the responsibilities of businesses when applying the e-mark, particularly in relation to quantity control, documentation, and conformity assessment. Senior Manager, Ing David Bartolo, provided examples on the implementation of the e-mark requirements.

This session formed part of the MCCAA’s ongoing efforts to raise regulatory and standardisation awareness and ensure the correct implementation of EU directives in Malta, ultimately contributing to consumer protection and fair-trade practices.
