The Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority has been assigned the responsibility for the Office of the Consul for Goldsmiths and Silversmiths on 1st July 2021 in line with Legal Notice 270 of 2021 which brings into force Act VII of 2021.
The functions and duties of the Consul are discharged by the Director General (Standards and Metrology) or any public officer authorised in writing by the Director General to discharge such duties. The MCCAA has set up an office within the Standards and Metrology Institute to ensure the effective implementation of these functions and duties.
The Office of the Consul for Goldsmiths and Silversmiths offers the below services:
Maintains a Public Valuation Office. The opening hours of the Valuation Office are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 08:30 and 12:30.
Issues the official prices of gold and silver bullion for the purpose of valuation - the prices are published on the Government Notices that can be found here.
Assigns, authorises and registers personal identification responsibility marks to manufacturers or importers/ sponsors - Consul’s Authorisation for the assignment of a Manufacturer’s or Sponsors’ Mark/Hallmark form can be found here.
Authorises registered manufacturers/ sponsors to hallmark their own jewellery.
Conducts direct market surveillance and collects samples.
