Getting ready for the end of the transition period
Even if the European Union and the UK conclude a highly ambitious partnership covering all areas agreed in the Political Declaration by the end of 2020, the UK’s withdrawal from the EU acquis, the internal market and the Customs Union, at the end of the transition period will inevitably create barriers to trade and cross-border exchanges that do not exist today.
On the 9thof July 2020 the European Commission has adopted a Communication to help national authorities, businesses and citizens prepare for the inevitable changes that will arise at the end of the transition period. Changes will occur to cross-border exchanges between the EU and the UK as of 1 January 2021– irrespective of whether an agreement on a future partnership has been concluded or not.
It is therefore essential that all stakeholders take note of this, and that they ensure their readiness for these broad, far-reaching and inevitable changes.
