In accordance to Legal Notice 489 of 2011, pesticide application equipment in professional use must be inspected at regular intervals.

Pesticide application equipment shall be inspected at least once until the 1^st January 2020: 

1. Certification issued until 1^st January 2020 for powered knapsack sprayers with a tank capacity up to 7 litres and an engine power rating of up to 2hp shall remain valid for a period of up to 5 years.
2. Certification issued until 1^st January 2020 for other powered knapsack sprayers shall remain valid for a period of up to 4 years.
3. Certification issued until 1^st January 2020 for other pesticide application equipment not mentioned in i) and ii) shall remain valid for a period of up to 3 years.

Certificates issued for inspections conducted thereafter shall remain valid as per below:

1. For powered knapsack sprayers with a tank capacity up to 7 litres and an engine power rating of up to 2hp it shall remain valid for a period of up to 5 years.
2. For other powered knapsack sprayers it shall remain valid for a period of up to 3 years.
3. For other pesticide application equipment not mentioned in i) and ii) it shall remain valid for a period of up to 2 years.

It is to be noted that manually operated hand held pesticide application equipment and manually operated knapsack sprayers with a tank capacity of up to 20 L are not subject to the pesticide application equipment inspections requirements.

The requirements for equipment to pass an inspection are detailed in full in Schedule II of L.N. 489 of 2011. The inspection shall cover all aspects important to achieve a high level of safety and protection of human health and the environment. The equipment must be in such a condition to able to be filled and emptied easily, prevent leaking, permit easy cleaning, ensure safe operations and must be capable of being immediately stopped from the operator’s seat (where applicable). In addition to this, the inspections must pay particular attention to certain parts of the pesticide application equipment.

The targets of an inspection for a particular piece of equipment depend on the type of equipment - as outlined below:
